Moses Michael Levi Barrow, formerly known by his rapper stage name Shyne, is a Belizean politician who is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives and the Leader of the United Democratic Party of Belize.
Born in Belize City, he moved to New York City as a child and began rapping as a teenager. On the verge of releasing his debut album, in 1999 he went to a New York City nightclub with Sean “Diddy” Combs, which sparked an argument for which two years later he was convicted of assault and illegal possession of a weapon, and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
While serving his prison sentence, Shyne became interested in Judaism, becoming observant and officially changing his name to Moses Michael Levi Barrow in 2006. In 2010, he moved to Jerusalem, where he spent his time studying Torah, and returned to Belize in 2013, the year he began his political career.
The Honorable Shyne is a Hulu documentary that premiered this month and tells this fascinating story. Directed by Marcus A. Clarke and produced in association with ESPN and the Andscape brand, it chronicles the pivotal moments in his life and also features the former rapper reflecting on his relationship with Diddy.
