Demi Moore won her first Golden Globe for Best Actress for The Substance, Brazilian Fernanda Torres surprised by winning Best Actress for I'm Still Here, Conclave won Best Screenplay and Wicked received the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
But another of the winners was The Brutalist, the epic post-Holocaust drama The Brutalist starring Adrien Brody, took home the award for Best Drama Film. Directed by Brady Corbet, this award makes it a strong contender for the Oscars.
The brutalist The film tells the story of a Hungarian Jewish architect who rebuilds his life in the United States after surviving the Holocaust. Corbet, who won Best Director, said in his speech that he had been told “this film was ‘unwatchable.’ No one asked for a three-and-a-half-hour film about a mid-20th-century designer, but it worked.” Adrien Brody, meanwhile, was recognized as Best Actor.
For its part, Emilia Perez, directed by Jacques Audiard, won Best Musical or Comedy Film. This Netflix film, which combines musical elements and transgressive narratives, also won awards for Best Supporting Actress, for the work of Zoe Saldana), Best Original Song and Best Film Not in the English Language.
In the film, Karla Sofia Gascon, who plays a Mexican drug trafficker who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, gave an emotional speech upon receiving the award. The actress, a trans woman, said in her speech that “light always triumphs over darkness. They can imprison us or beat us, but they can never take away our soul, existence or identity.”
In addition to the award-winning film, which is set in Tel Aviv, Israel was also the star of the night thanks to Israeli star Gal Gadot, who presented one of the awards while recalling the situation of the hostages in Gaza on social media.
