This is a series of photographs that offer a close look at the historic battles that liberated the city during the War of Independence. During the conflict, the streets of Jerusalem became a battlefield, with fierce clashes between the Israel Defense Forces and a coalition of opposition forces, including Jordanian and Egyptian troops, Arab volunteers and British allies.

In one of the photographs, a group of soldiers is seen after the occupation of a Katamon, a key neighborhood in the conflict, or a group of city residents anxiously waiting for the news in 1948.

Efrat Sinai, KKL-JNF archives director, said: “As we commemorate the 57th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, these photos serve as powerful testimonies to the resilience of our people and the indomitable spirit that has defined our city throughout of history.”
