Israel's Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, challenged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again this Tuesday, reiterating that the Temple Mount is a place of prayer for Jews, after the president denied him any authority to alter the ' status quo'.
“The policy of the Minister of National Security is to allow freedom of worship for Jews in all places, including the Temple Mount, and Jews will continue to do so in the future as well,” Ben Gvir responded in a statement released by his office.
“It is a sovereign area in the capital of the State of Israel.”, added the minister. “There is no law that allows one to engage in racist discrimination against Jews on the Temple Mount or anywhere else in Israel,” he concluded.
Ben Gvir visited the Esplanade this morning, taking advantage of the Tisha B'av holiday, accompanied by thousands of followers and, from there, he claimed the right of Jews to pray; a symbolic gesture that has already been repeated on several occasions, causing disagreements in the government.
Shortly after, Netanyahu's Office assured in a statement that any legislation on the place of worship - the third most important for Islam after Mecca and Medina - It depended on the Government and not on the “private policy” of any minister.
According to the 'status quo' in force since 1967, the site is reserved exclusively for the worship of Muslims, while Jews can only enter as visitors.
