The head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, sent this Tuesday a congratulatory message to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, for his re-election in Sunday's elections, considered fraudulent by a large part of the international community.
"We praise the Russian position of supporting the Palestinian cause, in the face of the battle to defend our people against the Israeli occupation, one of the most important weapons of American hegemony in the Middle East," said Haniyeh, who lives comfortably in Qatar, in a statement.
The leader of the terrorist movement wished to "consolidate ties of friendship with Russia and improve forms of cooperation" as Hamas wages a war with Israel in the Gaza Strip that began with the group's brutal attack on October 7.
"I wish luck and success to the Russian president, in the interest of the Russian people and the world for the construction of a multipolar global system that does justice to oppressed peoples," said Haniyeh, which has among its allies Russia, Iran, Qatar and Türkiye, compared to the Western world.
The Hamas leadership is regularly received in the Kremlin and Palestinian factions have met in recent months in Moscow to promote a national reconciliation dialogue after the fracture between Fatah and Hamas in 2007.
Much of the international community, such as the US, the European Union or Canada, have refused to congratulate Putin and have not recognized the legitimacy of the elections, in which he ran without real opposition.
Putin was re-elected for a fifth term with 87,28% of the votes, as announced yesterday by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Russia at the close of the vote.
