Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, announced that it will deactivate its independent fact-checking program in the United States this year, and replace it with a system of Community Notes, similar to the collaboration model used by X, Elon Musk's social network, formerly known as Twitter.

The main argument for this measure is that they felt that external fact-checkers had their own biases and that too much content was being evaluated. Joel Kaplan, Meta's Director of Global Affairs, explained in a statement that they saw that “this approach works in X, where the community decides when messages need more

According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, these measures are in part a response to political events, such as the recent presidential election of Trump, explaining that “the recent elections mark a cultural turning point towards the priority of freedom of expression.”

The move has raised concerns at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which has criticized Meta, citing its inaction in the face of reports of anti-Semitic content since Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023. Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the ADL, expressed surprise at the move: “It is incredible that one of the most profitable companies in the world is significantly backtracking in the fight against anti-Semitism, hate and misinformation.”
