According to statements by its military spokesman, Yehya Sarea, the projectile was aimed at the Israeli Ministry of Defense.
The Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed this Tuesday the launch of a hypersonic missile against Israel, in what they described as part of their “fight” for Palestinians in Gaza. This attack is the third carried out by the extremist group in a period of twelve hours, according to statements by its military spokesman, Yehya Sarea.
In a statement, Sarea said the missile, identified as Palestine-2, was targeting the Israeli Ministry of Defense, in Tel Aviv, and said it reached its target without being intercepted by Israeli defense systems.
"The missile force carried out a military operation against the so-called Israeli Ministry of Defense in the occupied area of Jaffa (Tel Aviv) with a Palestine-2 type hypersonic ballistic missile″, Sarea declared.
According to him, this is the Houthis' third military operation against Israel in the last twelve hours, after having previously launched a hypersonic missile and four drones against “vital targets” in Tel Aviv.
The spokesman for the armed group stressed that these actions are part of what he described as the "holy jihad" of his movement in support of the Palestinian people and in response to Israeli operations in Gaza. He warned that the attacks will continue and even intensify as long as the Israeli "aggression" and blockade on the Gaza Strip persist.
Sarea added that Houthi actions against Israel also include attacks on ships linked to the country in the Red and Arabian Seas, in an escalation that began after the start of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023.
Israel's response and previous attacks
So far, Israel has not issued an official response to Houthi claims about this latest attack. However, in previous weeks, the Houthis have israeli forces have carried out attacks on Houthi targets in Yemen, including bombings on key ports used by the rebels.
In addition, Israeli defense systems have previously intercepted missiles and drones launched by the Houthis, although the latter insist that some of their projectiles have managed to hit Israeli territory.
The Houthi movement, which is backed by Iran, has intensified its military activity against Israel since the beginning of the war in GazaThese actions reflect regional alliances in the conflict, with Iran supporting groups such as the Houthis in Yemen, as well as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in their confrontation with Israel.
The Houthi attacks come at a time when both Israel and Hamas have acknowledged progress in third-party-mediated negotiations for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. However, regional tensions and actions by actors such as the Houthis could complicate efforts to reach a truce.
Israel has repeatedly said it will respond to any threat to its territory, whether on the Gaza front or from external actors such as Houthi rebels, which could lead to a further escalation in the conflict.
