The Elixir of Love, or L'elisir d'amore is an operatic giocoso melodramma in two acts with music by Gaetano Donizetti and an Italian libretto by Felice Romani, based on the libretto The Philtre, by Eugène Scribe, for the opera by Daniel-François Auber. This is one of the most frequently performed of all Donizetti's operas.
Under the direction of Shirit Lee Weiss, the Israeli Opera revives this classic as a tribute to the iconic production by Omri Nitzan, who had already directed a version of the opera in 1997.
The play will be on stage until November 18, and stands out for its colorful staging and the singers' performances that manage to combine classical elements with a modern touch.
The story takes place in an Italian village transformed into an Israeli kibbutz, where sunflower fields and local elements highlight the connection with Israeli culture.
Nemorino, the main character, is a young working-class man who is in love with Adina, and will have to compete for her love with the arrogant Sergeant Belcore. Dulcamara's character is the one who brings a comic touch and surprised the audience by incorporating expressions in Hebrew.
