US forces say they have killed two members of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group and wounded another in Syria with "precision strikes."

"The terrorists were transporting a load of weapons that were destroyed in the bombing," which took place in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which operates throughout the Middle East, said on social network X.

In that area, which until a few weeks ago was under the control of the Syrian regime and the Russian forces supporting it, US forces already carried out a similar bombing last Thursday in which a senior IS official named Abu Yusif, alias 'Mahmud', was killed.

According to CENTCOM, there are about 8.000 IS members detained in various prisons in Syria, and one of the group's objectives is precisely to force their release.

On Thursday, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick S. Ryder said U.S. troops in Syria had doubled shortly before the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad and now number 2.000.

Ryder ruled out the idea that the US troops had any intention other than to combat the Islamic State and indicated that the stay of these troops would be temporary, a statement that makes more sense considering the well-known position of President-elect Donald Trump of disengaging from conflicts that he considers unrelated.

The presence and activity of IS in Syria at this time of transition is one of the factors that most worries the international community, and even the United Nations: UN Secretary General António Guterres praised Turkey's role in preventing IS from strengthening its presence in the Arab country.
