The Upper House, in charge of authorizing these appointments, gave its approval by 53 votes in favor and 43 against.

Lew will replace Thomas Nides, who was in the position from June 2021 until last July. Since then, Stephanie Hallett, the United States chargé d'affaires in Israel, was in charge of that diplomatic legation on an interim basis.

The new ambassador, 68, is an expert in budget management who began his training in Washington as an advisor to the then president of the House of Representatives, Democrat Thomas P. O'Neill, during budget negotiations with the Ronald Reagan Administration. in the 1980s.

When US President Joe Biden nominated him in early September, the White House highlighted that throughout his career he has assumed "broad responsibilities" in economic diplomacy.

Lew, a New York Jew trained at the prestigious Harvard (Boston) and Georgetown (Washington) Law schools, is managing partner of the American private equity firm Lindsay Goldberg LLC and visiting professor of Public and International Relations at Columbia University.

He was a director of Citigroup between 2006 and 2009, just when the mortgage bubble burst.

As Obama's Chief of Staff, he entered the then president's closest circle after passing through a position that was familiar to him, that of director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, which he held between 2010-2012 and during the presidency of Bill Clinton, between 1998 and 2001.

The leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, pointed out that "with everything that is happening in Israel right now", the confirmation of Lew as ambassador is one of the most important votes that that plenary session has made "in a long time." ».

"Israel is in crisis, the United States needs to be at its side and the most urgent and obvious step is to ensure that we have an ambassador," he said before the vote took place, stressing that the need to give him the go-ahead was "irrefutable." ». EFE
