The new US president, Donald Trump, has said that he has “no confidence” in maintaining the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and in the conclusion of the three phases of the agreement, although he stressed that the Islamic terrorist organisation is “very weak”.

"I have no confidence. This is not our war, this is their war, but I think they are very weak on the other side (referring to Hamas)," Trump said when asked by a journalist in the Oval Office if he was confident of being able to maintain the ceasefire in Gaza and conclude the three phases of the agreement.

The Republican president also described the Gaza Strip as a “huge demolition site” and stressed that the coastal enclave “has to be rebuilt in a different way.”

“Gaza is interesting. It’s a great place. It’s right by the sea. The climate is great. Everything is good. It’s like you can do beautiful things there,” he said, and when asked if he would contribute to its reconstruction, he said: “I could.”

Trump also said he wants to be remembered in the future as a “peacemaker and unifier” and highlighted how his team played a key role in the ceasefire in Gaza, which facilitated the release of some Israeli hostages.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Trump on his inauguration, saying he looks forward to working with him to achieve “the return of the remaining hostages, destroy Hamas’ military capabilities and political mandate in Gaza, and ensure that the enclave never again poses a threat to Israel.”

If these objectives are not met, the Israeli authorities say they will continue the war against Hamas in Gaza instead of extending the ceasefire into its second phase, which implies the definitive cessation of hostilities.

Israeli officials see Trump's return as an opportunity to strengthen their regional interests, as was the case during the tycoon's first term in office, when the Abraham Accords were established, which normalized relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.

For his part, the president of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Mahmoud Abbas, congratulated Trump, assuring that the Ramallah government is ready to “achieve peace” during his term. Aurora and EFE
