Sigd is a religious holiday of the Beta Israel community, the Jews of Ethiopia, which commemorates the giving of the Torah to the prophet Moses on Mount Sinai. It is celebrated on the 29th of the month of Cheshvan, 50 days after Yom Kippur.
During the Sigd, members of the community pray for the rebuilding of the Temple, fast, recite Psalms, and thank God for their return to Eretz Israel.
This year, thousands of members of the Ethiopian Jewish community gathered on Thursday at Jerusalem's Armon Hanatziv promenade, which with its panoramic view of the Holy City has become an iconic location for this holiday. The celebration is considered one of the holidays of the State of Israel since the Knesset recognized it in July 2008.
During the event, community leaders, known as kessim, led prayers and readings of sacred texts, while attendees participated in traditional ceremonies, songs and dances.
