The traditional celebration of Sigd is the religious ceremony that remembers the giving of the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai. It is considered one of the most important holidays within the Beta Israel community, that is, the Jews of Ethiopia, and is celebrated after Yom Kippur, on the 29th day of the month of Cheshvan in the Hebrew calendar.

Every year, the community commemorates the date by dressing in white, and carrying colorful umbrellas around Jerusalem, on a seafront promenade. This year, Sigd took place on the night of November 12 and during the day on Monday the 13th. But unlike other years, the context of the conflict with Hamas meant that the holiday was publicly commemorated only by some community leaders.

Instead, another ceremony was held at a migrant absorption center in the northern community of Nir Etzion. A large part of the Ethiopian community lived in Sderot, one of the cities most affected by the surprise Hamas attack on October 7.

Ofir Sofer, the Minister of Aliyah and Integration, participated in the celebration in Nir Etzion. There he expressed that this holiday “is a celebration that expresses unity and longing for Jerusalem. Precisely in these days, despite the pain and sorrow, the people of Israel are united… I see it on the ground, the unity is only growing between us.”

  1. The Jerusalem rabbinate gave them Jewishness based on the fact that they rested on Saturday and ate similar to what kashrut proposes. Well, if that were the case there would be thousands of Jews in other towns. And they denied my son, from Judaism, a lot because his mother is not Jewish although he and we keep Shabbat, we eat kosher and he also has a disability for which he does not harm anyone. That is, he decides on what basis? This racial issue, how much damage he does.
Please post this message so maybe someone can help us resolve it.

    1. Good morning, I understand that one is JEW if one's MOTHER is Jewish. There are women who convert out of conviction (study, practice, and live as such), but they have to prove that it is out of conviction and not just marry someone Jewish.
