Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed on Friday that the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian terrorists held in Israel will begin "as planned" on Sunday, while the Security Cabinet continues to meet today to give the green light to the implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza on Sunday.
"Once the Cabinet and the government give their approval and the agreement enters into force, the release of the hostages will proceed as planned, with the (first) hostages expected to be released on Sunday," Netanyahu's office announced in a statement on Friday.
The Security Cabinet, made up of a small group of ministers and senior security officials, is currently meeting in Jerusalem, but a full government vote on the deal is not expected until tomorrow evening, an official confirmed.
Shortly before the Security Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu conducted a security assessment of the implementation of the agreement with the negotiating team, which returned from Doha last night after signing the ceasefire agreement.
Both the Security Cabinet and the Government were expected to vote yesterday on the approval of a ceasefire in Gaza, after more than 15 months of war, and to gradually release the 94 hostages (alive and dead) still held in the enclave.
But yesterday, Netanyahu accused the Hamas terrorist group of trying to obtain "last-minute" concessions and of wanting to include in the agreed exchange Palestinian heavyweight terrorists imprisoned in Israel and accused of murdering Israelis, so he cancelled the vote.
Early this morning, amid fears that the ceasefire announced Wednesday night by Qatar would collapse, Netanyahu's office assured that the differences with Hamas had been resolved by mediators, and that the agreement was going ahead.
