The Ministry of Economy canceled the visit to Paraguay of a delegation of Israeli economists, under the backdrop of the diplomatic altercation following Asunción's decision to return the Paraguayan embassy from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv.

“The decision of the new president, [Mario Abdo] Benítez, has a high economic price, not just political,” said the Minister of Economy, Eli Cohen, of the Kulanu party, when settling the trip organized by his portfolio for the month of December. . “The attempt to strengthen economic ties with Israel and enjoy Israeli technology; while simultaneously violating an agreement made between both countries is hypocrisy, which has a price.”

The delegation's objective was to work to strengthen economic relations between both countries and help the economic development of Paraguay.

Last May, the then Paraguayan president, Horacio Cartes, had inaugurated his country's new embassy in Jerusalem, following in the footsteps of the United States and Guatemala.

However, last week, Paraguay's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Castiglioni, announced that the embassy would be moved to Tel Aviv, as "an offering to the peace process."

In response to the announcement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Foreign Ministry to return the Israeli ambassador to Paraguay for consultations and to close the Israeli Embassy in Asunción.

According to reports, Arab leaders and Turkey would have pressured Paraguayan President Abdo Benítez to move his country's embassy back to Tel Aviv.
