The Austrian postal company (Post) presented a special stamp dedicated to the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig (1881-1942), considered one of the most important in the world in the first part of the XNUMXth century.


The piece, issued within the 'Literature of Austria' postal series, carries a photo and a quote from the writer ("it is better to understand a person than to judge him"), has a circulation of 290.000 copies and a value of 1,20 euros ($1,30).

Stefan Zweig was a staunch opponent of war and fascism, and his prolific work ranges from poetry, essays and biographies to novels.

Among his best-known works are "Stellar Moments of Humanity" (1927), his autobiography "The World of Yesterday" (1941) and "Chess Novel" (1942).

The author, born into a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna, fled the Nazis in 1939, first to the United States and then to Brazil, where he committed suicide - along with his wife - in 1942, convinced that fascism was going to end. prevail in the Second World War. EFE
