Sara Netanyahu, the wife of the prime minister, said on Monday that she had spoken in Florida with the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, about the need to speed up the release of the hostages who remain in the Gaza Strip.

"I stressed the urgent need to act for his release and prompt return," he wrote in a message posted on the social network Instagram.

Sara Netanyahu also spoke with the president-elect about “the strong friendship between Israel and the United States” during dinner at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump has expressed his support for the negotiations undertaken by the administration of current US President Joe Biden, which include the mediation of Egypt.

More than thirteen months into the war in Gaza, international pressure and a large part of the Israeli population are focused on demanding an agreement with the Palestinian Islamic terrorist group Hamas, which would allow the release of the 97 hostages still in the enclave, of whom 34 are believed to be dead.

Since the war began, Israel and Hamas have only managed to reach a one-week truce agreement, between November 24 and 30, 2023, which allowed the release of 105 hostages - 81 Israelis and 24 foreigners - in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.
