New US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a first phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, pledging that support for Israel is a “top priority” for President Donald Trump.

The head of US diplomacy also congratulated Netanyahu for his "successes" against the terrorist groups Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and pledged to work "tirelessly" to secure the release of the remaining hostages held in the coastal enclave.

“Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to underscore that maintaining strong U.S. support for Israel is a top priority for President Trump,” the State Department said.

Rubio also “conveyed that he looks forward to addressing the threats posed by Iran and seeking opportunities for peace.”

The new secretary of state, who was sworn in on Tuesday, has served in the Senate since 2010, where he has always positioned himself as a staunch defender of Israel and a supporter of a tough stance against Iran.

Israel and Hamas announced last week a ceasefire and hostage release agreement that was mediated by the outgoing Joe Biden administration (2021-2025) and the new Trump team. Aurora and EFE
