Rehabilitation work on Kibbutz Kfar Aza, one of the communities hardest hit by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, began on Wednesday and will continue until the summer of 2026, according to Tkuma, the Israeli government agency in charge of leading the work.
“Demolition began today at Kibbutz Kfar Aza as part of the community rehabilitation plan, funded by the Tkuma Administration,” the agency said in a statement.
The kibbutz, located less than three kilometres from the Gaza border, was home to around 700 people before the attack, of whom 60 were killed and 19 kidnapped by Hamas, 14 of whom have since been released.
The survivors of the Hamas attack, as in other border communities, have been displaced, most of whom have spent the past year in state-funded shelters.
After 14 months of war in Gaza, In November, the Israeli government approved the budget for the recovery of this community, which includes the demolition of 97 buildings and the remodeling of another 400.
According to Tkuma, the budget for the reconstruction of the farming community is around 53 million euros.
More than 16 kibbutzim, including Nir Oz and Beeri, among the most affected, are part of this rehabilitation project., which focuses on areas that suffered severe damage as a result of the Hamas attack on October 7, in which more than 1.000 people were killed and 250 were abducted.
The Israeli government has announced the allocation of 234 million euros for the reconstruction of communities near the Gaza Strip.
