Qatar, a financial backer of Hamas and a key mediator in the agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic terrorist group, announced on Saturday that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip will come into effect tomorrow, Sunday, at 8.30:XNUMX a.m.
“As coordinated by the parties to the agreement and the mediators, the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 19, Gaza local time,” Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al Ansari said in a message on X.
"We recommend that residents take precautions, exercise maximum caution and await instructions from the authorities," he added.
Qatari authorities, who announced the agreement on Sunday, said at the time that the ceasefire would come into effect "on Sunday, January 19, at 12.15:XNUMX p.m." without specifying whether that was Israeli or Qatari time.
Doha's new announcement comes after the Jerusalem government approved the agreement early Saturday morning.
In its first phase, which will last 42 days, Hamas will release a total of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for the release by the Jewish State of hundreds of Palestinian terrorists imprisoned in Israel, including numerous murderers, and will give the green light for the entry of humanitarian aid and fuel into the entire Gaza Strip and the rehabilitation of hospitals.
During the development of these actions, the parties will finalize the details of a second and third phase.
Qatari Prime Minister Mohamed bin Abdulrahman said that the mediators and guarantors of the agreement “will try to ensure that everything agreed in the first phase is implemented, and that an understanding can be reached on the second phase so that this is the final phase and the war is brought to an end.”
Egyptian security sources said in Cairo that Egypt and its partners in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza have finalized preparations for the implementation of the provisions of the pact, in particular "the formation of a joint operations room to monitor" its implementation.
This is the first ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas since a one-week truce in November 2023.
