Israeli society is divided over whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is fit to govern as he faces a corruption trial, in which he is expected to testify starting on December 10.

According to a new poll by the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), 48% of Israelis believe that the president cannot govern effectively in a wartime context while testifying, while 46% believe that he can.

The gap is slightly larger when divided between Israeli Arabs (61% believe he would not be fit to govern) and Jewish Israelis (49% believe he would be fit to govern).

The poll highlights the deep divisions within Israeli society, but also the volatility of its attitudes towards the prime minister., who faced very low approval ratings before the war but has seen his heavy-handed approach against Hamas and Hezbollah propel him up in the polls.

However, more and more Israelis (57% in November, compared to around 50% in March) believe that The government is not doing enough to free the 101 Israeli hostages still held in the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu has been charged since 2019 with fraud, bribery and breach of trust in three separate cases and is accused of receiving gifts in exchange for favors and preferential treatment in order to achieve positive coverage in various media outlets.

Netanyahu's testimony was due to begin in November 2023, but was delayed several times due to the war in Gaza. This July, his legal team requested to postpone that hearing to March 2025, but the court rejected it and set the date for December 2, which it later agreed to postpone for eight more days.
