Paraguayan President Santiago Peña said Wednesday in a special session of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, that with its decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv back to Jerusalem, Paraguay is sending a strong message: “We will not abandon Israel.”
The Paraguayan president arrived on Wednesday to inaugurate the Paraguayan diplomatic headquarters in the holy city again tomorrow, which was moved to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in 2018 by then-president Horacio Cartes and, a few months later, was returned to Tel Aviv by his successor, Abdo Benítez.
“We are with you, we have always seen you as a sister nation. We hope to inspire more nations to move their embassies to Jerusalem,” said Peña from the Knesset rostrum.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his speech at the same session by praising Peña, whom he called a “brave, honest, determined and proactive leader.”, and assured that this decision renews a “historic friendship” between both countries.
“You chose not to stand aside. History will remember those who stood up for Israel’s rights in its difficult times. We will remember it and the world will remember it. Because our war is also the war of all free nations,” the Israeli president said.
En este sentido, The Paraguayan president called for the “immediate” return home of all hostages still in the hands of Hamas and warned that “the cowardly enemies of Israel will be defeated.”
Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, for his part, called on “all nations to fight the devil” and to move their embassies to Jerusalem because “this is where they belong, the eternal capital of Israel.”
“For us, for the Paraguayan people, being here means being in the place where we value things. Freedom. We have given our lives for freedom. For our independence. For our sense of belonging. So we understand very well what is happening here right now.”, Peña said.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid also welcomed Peña's decision, telling him during his speech in the Knesset that "his voice is needed in the face of injustice" that Israel is currently experiencing.
Before going to Parliament, the Paraguayan president held a meeting with the Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, who welcomed the transfer of the diplomatic headquarters in a year in which Israel has “lost sons and daughters” and has “hostages in the dungeons of Gaza.”
On May 21, 2018, then Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes moved the Paraguayan embassy to Jerusalem, following the political initiative initiated by Donald Trump from the United States. On September 5, the new president, Mario Abdo Benítez, moved it back to Tel Aviv in order to keep Paraguay neutral in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
On October 29, the Knesset approved a bill that bans the opening of new consulates in Jerusalem in order to encourage the establishment of embassies. With Peña Nieto's arrival to power in 2023, Paraguayan foreign policy took a new turn in the Middle East.
