Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that “immunity must be respected” in relation to the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“I think everything is very clear. There are immunities and immunities must be respected,” he said when asked if Italy would comply with the ICC order against Netanyahu for the bombings against the Islamic terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Last November, the controversial international court in The Hague issued arrest warrants against the prime minister, his former defence minister, Yoav Gallant, and Hamas' top commander, Mohammed Deif, who was killed by the Israeli Air Force in an attack in Gaza.

Tajani, also Vice President of the Italian Executive, referred to this issue after participating in an event at the Italian Embassy to the Holy See in Rome, one day after meeting in the city with the Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar.

The Italian government of Giorgia Meloni has expressed ambiguous positions on the compliance with these rulings and her partner and also vice president, the leader of the far-right League Matteo Salvini, even said that he would be “welcome”.

Tajani also hailed the recent agreement on the release of hostages and a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas as “good news”.
