A team at Tel Aviv University, led by Riccardo Rampado and Dan Peer, vice president of research and development at the university, has achieved a milestone in the development of drugs for the treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.
By being able to deliver drugs based on messenger RNA (mRNA) directly to the intestine, without them passing through the liver, the discovery could revolutionize the treatment of diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
By modifying the composition of lipid nanoparticles, it was shown that drugs could be precisely targeted to the intestines. To prove the concept, the researchers encapsulated the anti-inflammatory protein interleukin-10 in mRNA and administered it to animal models of Crohn's disease and colitis.
Professor Peer highlighted that they discovered that “by altering the proportions of lipids in the nanoparticles we could determine their fate in the bloodstream. This could apply not only to the intestine, but also to other organs such as the pancreas.”
