Michal Schwartz, an Israeli scientist and winner of the Israel Prize, is one of the researchers leading a team working on an innovative immunotherapy treatment that could slow aging.
Schwartz has been researching the relationship between the immune system and brain aging for 27 years, and was the first to discover that the brain is deeply dependent on the immune system for maintenance throughout life.
Schwartz's team is developing an antibody, currently in clinical trials, to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, but which could in the future be applied to broader immunological treatments that prevent brain aging.
Although Schwartz's research focuses on innovative treatments, she stresses the importance of healthy habits to preserve cognitive health, such as regular physical exercise and good nutrition.
Schwartz explained that “the ultimate goal is to prevent the deterioration of the immune system” and added that “if we succeed in doing so, we can restore and strengthen it through immunotherapy.”
I think what Dr. Schwartz and her team are able to achieve is excellent, since cognitive decline is one of the most important problems when it comes to aging.
