Israel urged the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon to remove a senior Lebanese Army officer from a command post on Israel's northern border for being an agent planted by the Shiite Islamic terrorist group. Hezbollah, according to a report in the Yediot Ahronot newspaper.

Jerusalem asked UNIFIL to ensure that Major Yahya Husseini who serves as a “liaison officer” for Hezbollah is immediately removed from his position, the report states.

Hezbollah “planted” Husseini in the Lebanese Army with the aim of increasing the terrorist group's influence in the armed forces of the neighboring Arab country, Israeli sources indicate.

Israeli Intelligence maintains that Husseini maintains permanent contacts with Hezbollah agents, receives instructions from them and transfers information to the terrorist group.

According to the report, Husseini is the first high-ranking member of the Lebanese Army to work for Hezbollah, according to what Israel knows.

Recently, the UN Security Council extended the mandate of the UNIFIL peacekeeping force, giving its troops greater powers to confront Hezbollah's buildup of weapons and missiles in the area.

Following these changes, UNIFIL will increase its surveillance activities in southern Lebanon, including entering villages where Hezbollah terrorists operate.
