The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Tuesday that it eliminated the commander of the last Hamas battalion in the town of Rafah, Mahmoud Hamdan, in a drone attack several weeks ago in the southern Gaza Strip.
“He played an important role in planning the invasion of Israel on October 7 and developed his plans in the city of Rafah before the entry of the troops", they explained in a military statement.
The report also said that in "additional attacks" troops neutralized other senior commanders of the battalion responsible for the Tal al Sultan area in Rafah, along with dozens of terrorists.
On August 21, the IDF had already announced that it had eliminated the Rafah brigade.
The IDF said it had found hundreds of tunnels leading to Egypt in the Rafah area that were used by Palestinian militants to traffic weapons.
That is why Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists on maintaining control of the Philadelphia corridor as a requirement for signing an agreement with Hamas, something that the terrorist group opposes, since it would mean the presence of Israeli troops in Gaza even after signing a ceasefire.
