The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday that it has deployed troops within the demilitarized area of the Golan Heights, on the border with Syria, as well as “in other places necessary for their security,” following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

“In an assessment of the situation following recent developments in Syria, including the entry of armed personnel into the buffer zone, the Israel Defense Forces have deployed troops to the buffer zone and other locations necessary for its defense, to ensure the security of the communities of the Golan Heights and the citizens of Israel,” the military said in a statement.

The message comes shortly after activist network Daraa24 claimed that Israeli forces have entered the Syrian town of Al Baaz, after “unknown individuals opened fire on a patrol” in the Golan Heights, something the army has not confirmed.

"We emphasize that the Israeli army is not interfering in internal events in Syria," the IDF said in a brief statement, following the fall of the Damascus regime in favor of rebel and Islamist groups.

The Israel Defense Forces "will continue to operate as long as necessary to protect the buffer zone and defend Israel and its civilians," they stressed.

The IDF has deployed the 98th Division to the border with Syria, along with the Paratroopers Brigade and the Commando Brigade, according to Army Radio (Galei Tzahal).

The IDF attacked the “buffer zone” near the Quneitra area today to reinforce the border, according to the outlet, which also reported that classes in Druze villages in the Golan Heights have been suspended for the time being.

Israel, which has been transferring troops to the Syrian border since Friday, announced the day before that it had "assisted" UN forces after it recorded an attack by armed individuals near one of its positions in Hader (Syria), near the Golan Heights.

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed that Israeli troops “entered the buffer zone on the Syrian side of the border with Israel” following the attacks on UN personnel.

They belong to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), deployed as a peacekeeping mission in this buffer zone between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights, following the Yom Kippur War in 1974.
