BIRD Energy, a program under the Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation (BIRD), recently announced the funding of five joint projects between U.S. and Israeli companies for $7.5 million.

The investment is also supported by the Israeli Ministry of Energy, the Israel Innovation Authority and the US Department of Energy and aims to promote cooperation in clean energy technologies, improving economic competitiveness, creating jobs and strengthening energy security.

The BIRD Foundation focuses on developing and commercializing sustainable energy systems, so all selected projects must secure at least 50% of their costs through self-financing and commit to repaying the grant in case of commercial success.

In total, an investment of around $16 million is expected, considering the additional $8.5 million that will be raised from private sources.

The five approved projects, selected for their high likelihood of commercial success, include Israeli company Lucy Borchard Shipping and US-based Newlight Marine Technologies, which will develop a system combining hydrogen and diesel to improve the efficiency of ship engines, and Nitrofix and ENERGY 1S1, which will work on the next generation of green ammonia.
