Israel Defense Forces threaten to respond to Syrian factions in case of attack

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi warned Saturday that he would respond both defensively and offensively to Syrian militias if they “misdirect” their actions against Israel as it advances in the conflict in the neighboring country.

"If such confusion occurs, there will be an offensive response, backed up by very strong defensive responses," the commander-in-chief of the Israel Defense Forces threatened.

Halevi said that Israel must monitor the situation in Syria “every few hours” given the constant changes in the neighboring country, which keeps the Jewish state on edge in the face of possible threats that this could pose.

"The main objective is to observe Iran's movements and interests, which is our top priority," the commander of the armed forces said.

Israel sees the Syrian war as an opportunity to strengthen its position against Iran, with which it is involved in escalating regional tensions and has exchanged two major waves of attacks to date, one in April and another in October.

The IDF also yesterday bombed the vicinity of one of the border crossings between Syria and Lebanon, saying it was targeting an Iranian arms trafficking route for the Shiite terrorist group Hezbollah.

Israel is “focusing on the local factions that are taking control of the area, assessing their actions, behavior and levels of deterrence, and making sure that they do not misdirect their actions toward us,” Halevi said.

The IDF on Saturday reinforced its operations in the Golan Heights, after having already sent more troops to the area on Friday.

It also conducted exercises to prepare for an “emerging incident” in the area.

The IDF assisted UN forces in Syria tonight after they came under attack in the Hader area, but did not provide further details on how they participated in defending these positions.

All this comes as rebels in Syria continue to advance, announcing this afternoon that they have secured control of the capitals of three provinces in southern Syria.

“The Military Operations Command has completed combing and securing the city centers of Deraa, Al Suweida and Quneitra, thus declaring the centers of the three southern provinces completely liberated and free from the forces of the criminal regime,” said Lieutenant Colonel Hasan Abdelghani, who acts as military spokesman for the insurgent coalition, in a brief statement published on his official account.

If confirmed, southern Syria will be practically in the hands of the insurgent coalition, led by the Levant Liberation Organization (Hayat Tahrir al Sham or HTS in Arabic), which launched its offensive against al-Assad on November 27.

The recovery of Deraa is very significant given that the city was the cradle of the popular revolts against Al Assad in 2011, within the framework of the so-called "Arab Spring", which later spread to the rest of the Arab country. Aurora and EFE

  2. A couple of comments.
    1) I am annoyed by headlines that end with an ellipsis: …
I am not encouraged to read the article, it seems disrespectful to the reader and suggests a lack of ability to put headlines that adequately summarize the content of the article.
(This trend may appeal to Gen Z, but not to Gen X readers, who still read.)
    2) The IDF does not “threaten”, the IDF WARNS.
