On Wednesday, more than 200 Gazans, including patients and their caregivers, were evacuated from the Gaza Strip to the United Arab Emirates and Romania for medical treatment. The information about the operation was confirmed by Israel and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The 231 people in total were transported through the Kerem Shalom crossing into Israel, and then to Ramon Airport near Eilat in the south of the country to be transferred to their final destinations. Among other things, the patients are traveling to treat conditions such as autoimmune diseases, cancer, blood disorders, kidney failure and trauma injuries.

The Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) was the agency of the Israeli Ministry of Defense responsible for organizing the evacuation in collaboration with the WHO, the United Arab Emirates and the European Union.

The WHO says there could be as many as 14.000 people in Gaza who require medical transfer due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Since 7 October, 5.000 people have already been transferred from Gaza for medical treatment.
