Israel's Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, ordered the Ministry of Labor this Sunday to stop childcare subsidies for ultra-Orthodox Jews who do not comply with Army recruitment orders.

In a letter, the attorney general defended that "there is no justification for funding daycare as an incentive for those appointed to military service to study the Torah" (Hebrew Bible).

The news comes after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) began sending recruitment orders to some 900 ultra-Orthodox Jews, after a Supreme Court decision struck down the exemption that has kept them out of the armed forces. for decades.

Of the 900 notified last week, only 48 showed up at the recruitment office, amid strong protests that ended in the raid of the Tel Hashomer military recruitment center, on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, by several ultra-religious young people last week. Tuesday.

One of the ultra-Orthodox ministers of the Government, a member of the United Torah Judaism party (key to Benjamin Netanyahu's government coalition), accused Baharav-Miara of wanting to "starve" the children of the ultra-Orthodox for political reasons.

"The attorney general's advice reveals the truth: they are not interested in the needs of the Army, only the obsessive persecution of the Torah world and the ultra-Orthodox family," said Meir Porush, Minister of Jerusalem Affairs.

At the beginning of April, a temporary rule expired that allowed maintaining the military exemption of Haredim (the Hebrew term for ultra-Orthodox Jews), who since the founding of the State of Israel have avoided compulsory service.

After months of controversy over whether the measure would remain in force or not, the Supreme Court decided that "there is no legal basis for excluding ultra-Orthodox men from the draft" and that if they do not serve in the Israel Defense Forces they should not receive educational subsidies either. and publicly funded social assistance.

After the war against the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza led to the massive mobilization of some 300.000 reservists, also for battalions both on the northern border with Lebanon and in the territory of Judea and Samaria (West Bank), many Israelis demand the first Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that all young people fulfill their military duty.

Now, the 67.000 eligible Haredi men (the equivalent of five military divisions) face gradual entry into the armed forces. EFE and Aurora

  1. That's not it either... the children and Haredi women are going to pay for it... who are slaves to their children, they work and mothers.
They are stupid, reading the Book is enough for them... and they never learn it.
I see this measure wrong..it is not fair
Giving them a hard time is fine, but not the children or their mothers.
It's also a waste of time... these guys don't work or go to war... it seems incredible that you don't know them yet.

  2. I hope that if they are going to apply this measure they plan to keep their communications under surveillance, lest in retaliation they provide intelligence information to terrorist organizations that are enemies of Israel.
