Iran on Saturday condemned a "terrorist" attack on its consulate in the Syrian city of Aleppo, in which Iranian diplomatic staff escaped unharmed, amid an offensive by Islamic militias in the region.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei “strongly condemned” the attack carried out by “terrorist elements” and considered it unacceptable under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will pursue this incident through serious legal and international channels,” Baghaei said.
The source did not provide details of the attack, but said all Iranian staff at the consulate were unharmed and safe.
The Islamist alliance Levant Liberation Organization and armed factions backed by Turkey have tightened their control of almost all of the northern Syrian city of Aleppo and the neighbouring province of Idlib after four days of offensive against the army of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The offensive, launched last Wednesday after days of intense bombardment against the pro-Turkish factions' stronghold, Idlib, has so far caused a death toll of around 350 on both sides, including around XNUMX civilians.
