An elderly Israeli woman was stabbed to death in an attack by a Palestinian terrorist in the central Israeli city of Herzliya on Friday, Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital confirmed. She was taken to the hospital after the attack and died shortly after.
The victim has been identified as Ludmila Lipovsky, 83, a Holocaust survivor who suffered at least six stab wounds and lived in a nursing home near the scene of the crime.
The Israeli police confirmed that it was a “terrorist attack” committed by a 28-year-old Palestinian resident of the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), who was “neutralized and arrested.”
“A number of police forces are continuing their operations at the scene and conducting extensive searches in the surrounding area,” a police statement said.
The security agency Shabak (also known as Shin Bet) said the attacker was a former informant for that agency whose cover had been blown.
According to Shabak, the suspect was involved in uncovering “terrorist networks in the West Bank” before his identity was revealed.
Israeli sources identified the suspect as Ibrahim Shalhoub, a native of the West Bank town of Tulkarem.
The Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency services treated the injured woman at the scene and transferred her to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.
“We received a report of a woman with a stab wound, we quickly arrived on the scene and found her unconscious with stab wounds. We provided initial treatment, stopped the bleeding and evacuated her in critical condition,” said an MDA paramedic who attended to the scene.
Reports indicate that the suspect was neutralized by gunfire from security guards from an Israel Post branch who were in the area.
