UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday called on the Palestinian Islamist terrorist group Hamas to continue the release of hostages scheduled for Saturday - which the group has threatened to interrupt - and urged to avoid a resumption of "hostilities" in Gaza.
"I call on Hamas to proceed with the release of hostages scheduled for next Saturday," Guterres said in a brief statement from Paris, where he is participating in a summit on artificial intelligence.
Hamas has threatened to postpone the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners scheduled for the 15th, after falsely claiming that Israel has not met the deadlines and requirements agreed upon in the ceasefire agreement.
“We must avoid at all costs the resumption of hostilities in Gaza, which would lead to an immense tragedy,” Guterres said before calling on “both parties” to honour the commitments made in the ceasefire agreement and to resume negotiations in Doha (Qatar) to begin the second phase of the pact.
US President Donald Trump has responded to Hamas' stance by saying that if the group does not proceed with the release of all hostages by Saturday, "all hell will break loose" for the Islamic terrorist organisation in the Gaza Strip.
