Qatar, one of the main mediators between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group, said on Tuesday that "technical meetings" are being held between the parties to reach a truce agreement in the Gaza Strip that would also allow for the release of hostages held in the enclave.
"Technical meetings continue to be held between the two sides," Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al Ansari was quoted as saying by private Qatari television Al Jazeera.
The official added that, so far, "no important meetings are being held" and that the meetings are focusing on resolving technical aspects of a possible truce, while he refused to comment on whether there is progress or details on the issues being discussed.
For his part, a Palestinian source in Cairo said that the talks have made very limited progress, especially regarding the return of displaced people to the north of the Gaza Strip, while hoping that the points of contention would be resolved. “will be clarified in the coming days.”
He also said that Israel insists on the release of a large number of hostages alive, although he welcomed the resumption of negotiations last weekend in Qatar as an indication “the desire of both parties to reach an agreement.”
"All indications are that Hamas is seeking a truce at this point," added the source, who asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter.
Negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip have received a new impetus at the start of the year, after failing a month ago, with optimistic messages from both Israel and Hamas, which has handed over the list with the names of the 34 hostages that would be released in the first phase of the agreement.
