It is now available for consultation in the digital catalog of the National Library of Israel a new set of old maps and illustrated books donated by Howard Golden.
Raquel Ukeles, director of collections at the library, expressed the organization's gratitude to the Golden couple. “This exquisite collection of maps and rare books dramatically expands our holdings of maps of the Holy Land and reinforces our position at the forefront of historical cartographic research,” said Ella Ukeles.
The donation consisted of 466 maps and 120 books that include maps, engravings and illustrations from different periods in the land of Israel. The oldest map in the collection is from 1475, and the newest ones are from the early XNUMXth century.
Among the most special maps is a map written in Dutch, printed in 1593 in Antwerp. In it, you can see illustrations of different sites in Jerusalem, in addition to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, sea monsters and ships.
The library has already cataloged and digitized all the files, in addition to taking the necessary measures to preserve the originals. The material is available for free download to students and researchers worldwide.
