The British family of Israeli Eli Sharabi, one of three Israeli hostages freed in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, told the BBC that they have experienced a “pendulum of emotions” during the 16 months he was held captive by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas.

Sharabi's brother-in-law, Steve Brisley, from Bridgend, Wales, also expressed concern about the physical condition in which he was released and whether he had any evidence that his wife, Lianne, and two teenage daughters, Noiya and Yahel, aged 16 and 13, were killed in the 7 October attacks.

Brisley told the public broadcaster today that “it is the end of the first part of the nightmare we have been in, but the beginning of the next chapter.” “It has been an incredibly emotional 24 hours since Eli’s name (52 years old) appeared on the list (of freed Israeli hostages),” he said.

“Finally getting confirmation that he’s alive and that he’s getting out is obviously what we’ve been working towards for the last 15, 16 months, but to see him paraded around in that propagandistic way was incredibly difficult,” she added.

Sharabi's father-in-law, Pete Brisley, recalled that for months the family "has not known whether he was alive or dead."

"We still don't know if he knows that he has lost his family, his wife and daughters, because no one knows if he saw them being killed or if he was taken out before," he said.

He also admitted that his relatives had not expected to see him appear with that physical appearance, “so thin, emaciated,” and said that “he looks like he has just left a concentration camp.” EFE and Aurora
