Jerusalem: A Journey Through Time is a Bar-Ilan University course that is now available openly and free of charge on the educational platform edX.

This is an introductory course that offers a tour of the history and archaeology of the city, from its origins in the fifth millennium BC to the Muslim conquest, guided by the renowned archaeologist Aren Maeir.

Highlighting some key points in the history of the city, such as those recounted in the Old and New Testaments, the time of the First and Second Temple, but also the Jerusalem of the Persian, Roman and Byzantine periods.

Maeir, director of the Tell es-Safi/Gat Archaeological Project and a member of the Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology at Bar-Ilan University, stressed that this new course is designed to be accessible to all audiences, regardless of their prior training, and that he hopes that “this course will serve as a gateway not only to the history of Jerusalem, but also to archaeology and the methodologies used to study the past.”

Lasting 16 weeks and requiring a commitment of two to four hours per week, the course includes video lectures, immersive virtual tours, and presentations by leading experts.
