The Turkish government on Monday denied rumours, published in some of the international press, that the Palestinian Islamic terrorist group Hamas, which governs Gaza but has a political office in Qatar, has moved its leadership to Turkey.
"The claim that Hamas's political bureau has moved to Turkey does not reflect the truth," said a statement cited by the Turkish state agency Anadolu and attributed to sources in the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
On November 9, Doha suspended its role as mediator in negotiations between Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid al-Ansari then clarified that “the information circulating” about a possible closure of Hamas’s political office in Doha “is not accurate.”
Hamas also denied on the same day that Qatari authorities had asked its leaders to leave the country.
Qatar does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, and since 2012 it has hosted Hamas's political office in Doha, where several of the terrorist group's political leaders reside, such as its former chief Khaled Mishal and the head of its negotiating team, Khalil al Haya.
The Turkish government maintains good relations with Hamas and senior members of the group, which is considered a terrorist organisation by the European Union, visit Türkiye frequently.
Last April, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received the then political leader of the terrorist group, Ismail Haniye, in Istanbul, and last August he met in the same city with two sons of Haniye, who was killed in Tehran in July in an attack that the Tehran regime has attributed to Israel.
Last September, the head of the Turkish secret services, Ibrahim Kalin, met with Hamas leaders in Ankara, Anadolu Agency reported, without revealing their names.
Since the official visit of the Emir of Qatar, Tamim Al Thani, to Ankara last Thursday, numerous Turkish media outlets have speculated on the possibility that Turkey will relieve Qatar in the role of mediator, a matter on which the Turkish government has not made any comments. EFE and Aurora
