Amsterdam authorities on Friday described what happened after a football match in the Dutch capital as an “outburst of violence against Israeli fans” and accused “rioters” of “anti-Semitic behaviour” and “actively seeking out” Israeli citizens to “attack and assault” them.
In a statement, the Amsterdam “triangle” – made up of the mayor’s office, the police and the public prosecutor’s office – said that the night after the match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv was “very hectic, with several incidents of violence directed against Maccabi fans” in various locations in the city, and said that riot police had to “intervene several times, protect Israeli fans and escort them to hotels.”
The national coordinator against anti-Semitism in the Netherlands sent a message on social media, in which he considered that what happened “has crossed all limits” and added: “Hide who you are. Don’t say where you come from. You are not safe here. If they know who you are, they will chase you, beat you or throw you into the frozen canal.”
Dutch police have arrested at least 62 people, whose identities or affiliations have not yet been revealed, while at least five people were injured during the riots. EFE
