A young man in his 30s died Thursday in Nahariya, northern Israel, after being hit by shrapnel from a rocket, according to emergency sources, bringing to 48 the number of civilians killed by attacks carried out by Hezbollah and other minor terrorist groups from Lebanon since October 2023.

“We arrived at an open space near a playground and saw a man in his 30s unconscious with shrapnel wounds. After a medical assessment, he was found to be lifeless and was declared dead,” said medic Dor Vaknin of the Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service in a statement.

Barak Lavi, a doctor with United Hatzalah, a volunteer emergency service, said witnesses saw the man hit by shrapnel as he fell into the park where he was standing.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), some 25 rockets were fired at the northern city, several of which were intercepted, and where alarms are triggered almost every day to encourage people to take refuge in nearby bunkers or in their homes.

Yesterday, a 71-year-old Israeli archaeologist was killed in southern Lebanon, where he had entered unofficially accompanying IDF troops, according to a military statement, which said that an Israeli soldier was also killed along with him in a clash with Hezbollah terrorists in southern Lebanon. The IDF military police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

On the Israeli side, 78 people have been killed by attacks launched from Lebanon, of whom 48 were civilians (six of them foreigners). In addition, 6 soldiers have fallen in combat in the south of the neighbouring country, as well as an elderly archaeologist who entered with the troops without permission.
