By Memory of Sefarad
El David Melul Jewish Museum in Béjar (Salamanca, Spain) has welcomed the presentation of the Association for the Memory of SefaradThe event was attended by the Councillor for Museums, Kevin Blázquez, and three of its founders, the economist Pedro Carmona, the Popular Party politician Daniel Morera and the journalist Ricardo Angoso. This event was held on November 22 in the city of Bèjar, Salamanca, and was attended by dozens of people called by the impetus to vindicate the Sephardic heritage.
The event was held in the city of Béjar because, in the words of its founder, Ricardo Angoso, “Béjar is a city that has great significance for the Jewish world, as it houses one of the four Jewish museums in our country and for its past full of history, but we also believe that it should project itself towards the future and from our new organization we put ourselves at your disposal to work together in everything that can contribute and result in the benefit of your community, which you represent today, and of your city.”
The main purposes of the Memory of Sefarad are: to reclaim Spain's Jewish memory and heritage, as well as the cultural legacy of the Sephardim, both outside Spain and in the country, contribute to the celebration of Jewish holidays and major celebrations in Spain, keep alive the flame of memory of what the Holocaust meant for the Jewish people, remembering the victims and promoting knowledge of the meaning that this tragic chapter of history has for Jews and, finally, promote all kinds of activities that have as their ultimate goal the knowledge of all the cultural and artistic expressions of the Sephardim in our country.
The main objectives of this new association are to create a digital newspaper on the Internet with current news from the Sephardic universe in the world that will be called La Voz de Sefarad, to organize a biannual meeting of representatives, media, institutions, and Sephardic communities from around the world, to hold an act of remembrance and memory of the victims of the Holocaust on January 27 of each year, coinciding with the international celebration of said date and annually awarding a Memory of Sefarad Prize to a personality or institution working in the field or for the benefit of the Sephardic world.
"The organization already has a large founding council made up of professionals from all areas and spheres of society, but all with the common denominator of their interest and appreciation for the Jewish world and Israel and especially for what the Sephardim have represented in the history of Europe, the Americas, the Mediterranean and the Balkans.", the organizers assured.
The new organization, made up of professionals and people from all walks of life and social and political conditions, has called for the reclaiming of the Sephardic cultural heritage as part of our society and not as something alien to it, because the Jewish community was integrated into our society and participated, in every sense and in every area, in our greatness as the great diversity and plurality that was that now lost Sefarad. Memoria de Sefarad will work hard to find that identity, to construct a new narrative about what the history of Spain was.
Asked about the reasons that led to the creation of Memoria de Sefarad, its founder, Ricardo Angoso, explained clearly at the event held in Béjar the reason: “The Sephardic world is dying, that is no secret to anyone, but there are still some initiatives, media and organizations that aim to keep alive the flame of that culture that was born at the hands of the Jews expelled by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain back in 1492. They were the soul of the authentic Sefarad that they carried in their hearts to all parts of the world. Memoria de Sefarad aims to vindicate and collect that flame that, although weak, will never go out.”
As everyone knows, the Sephardim are the descendants of the Spanish Jews expelled in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs and who left Sefarad (Spain), leaving behind their homes, lands, businesses, properties, friends and even some relatives who preferred to convert to Christianity than leave their beloved land - the famous Marranos. Initially, a first wave of migrants headed towards Portugal, from where they were later expelled, in 1496, by the Portuguese kings, and from there they spread throughout the world.
At the end of the presentation of Memoria de Sefarad, the students of the Mixed Training and Employment Program 'Servicios de Restauración' served a feast to the participants. The David Melul Jewish Museum in Béjar and the new association Memoria de Sefarad sealed, with this presentation in the city, a great alliance in favor of preserving Sephardic memory and Jewish traces in Spain.
